  8.       PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
  9.  
  10.            THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) is an intelligent SHELL Menu utility program
  11.       for McAfee Associates Anti-Virus programs VIRUSCAN, CLEAN, and VALIDATE.
  12.       VIRUS TERMINUS is menu driven and may be used with a mouse or keyboard.
  13.       The SCAN/CLEAN option switches have been made visible and can be toggled
  14.       through an easy to use interface. Reports may be viewed, printed, merged
  15.       or deleted. DOS BATCH files may be run directly from The VIRUS TERMINUS.
  16.       The Virus Terminus was designed to work in a stand alone PC environment.
  17.       Use of this program requires paid registration and/or site license fee.
  18.       Read VT45A.DOC for more information.

  20.            Virus Terminus v4.5 supports SCAN/CLEAN's advanced IMMUNIZATION and
  21.       RECOVERY functions. This function provides protection with recovery after
  22.       detection from new or unknown virus infectors.
  23.  
  24.            Virus Fact Sheets allow the user to obtain information on virus
  25.       infectors such as the known characteristics, areas of damage, the
  26.       McAfee Associates disinfection program needed, etc.
  27.  
  28.            The Virus Terminus includes a start-up SELF-TEST. Computer memory
  29.       and all files in the Terminus program directory are submitted to SCAN
  30.       for inspection. Self-Test is also available at any program menu while
  31.       The Virus Terminus is running.
  32.  
  33.            A support BBS with general public access is available.
  34.       Dial 908-206-1386 with No Parity, 8 Data bits, 1 Stop bit (N 8 1).
  35.       The BBS is online 24hrs 7 days a week. General shareware, latest
  36.       updates, support files, etc. and a message conference for registered
  37.       users is available.

  39.            TERMINUS was designed to run from a hard disk but will also
  40.       work satisfactorily if installed on a high capacity floppy (720K,
  41.       1.2MEG, or 1.44MEG disk size) drive where the main objective is
  42.       to quickly sanitize an already infected system. Installation on a
  43.       360Kb floppy disk activates automatic disk swapping to allow the
  44.       use of separate SCAN and/or CLEAN program disks. (Read VT45A.DOC)

  46.            The Virus Terminus caters to the low-end of the video standard
  47.       spectrum by offering compatibility with IBM MDA monochrome, IBM CGA
  48.       Color and those systems that utilize the IBM CGA standard but employ
  49.       a money saving green, amber or white monochrome display device. Any
  50.       VGA/EGA system downward compatible to CGAC80 will produce excellent
  51.       results.

  94.      Make sure you have the following files from each(* see below *) of the
  95.      above in the same subdirectory for hard disk installation or on the
  96.      same (* see note *) floppy for quick start and access to all TERMINUS
  97.      functions:

  104.    You should not use the Virus Terminus in any environment or on any
  105.    machine where another virus disinfector utility is currently installed
  106.    and running. This includes but is not limited to TSR anti-virus utilities.
  107.    No claim is made herein or otherwise as to compatibility with other
  108.    author/program virus disinfector & detector utilities.

  110.              Use The Virus Terminus in concert with the McAfee Associates
  111.                       anti-virus programs for best results.

  116.       DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN TERMINUS FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE IF IT IS ALREADY
  117.       INFECTED WITH A VIRUS. USE THE FLOPPY INSTALLATION INSTEAD! DO NOT
  118.       RUN ANY PROGRAMS LOCATED ON YOUR HARD DISK UNTIL ALL FILES AND YOUR
  119.       ENTIRE SYSTEM IS DISINFECTED. Use the installation instructions for
  120.       "SYSTEMS ALREADY INFECTED" found in VT45A.DOC

  122.          Follow the installation instructions in VT45A.DOC before running
  123.          The Virus Terminus!

  125.                    *****  UPDATE INFORMATION VERSION 4.5A *****
  126.  
  127.      1. The Virus Terminus v4.5 utilizes a dynamic front loader. The loader
  128.         requires a modest 45Kb RAM and is the part of the Virus Terminus
  129.         program left in memory when SCAN, CLEAN or DOS Shell functions are
  130.         requested by the user. This system WILL WORK even when installed on
  131.         a write-protected floppy disk.
  132.  
  133.         The files  vtcf2.exe, vtcf3.exe are no longer part of the Virus
  134.         Terminus file set. The files vt45a.exe, vtcf45.exe and vtcf1.exe are
  135.         currently the main components of the executable file set.
  136.  
  137.      2. SCAN/CLEAN program disk swapping is activated when a /D startup
  138.         option is detected. Please read vt45a.doc for more information on
  139.         this mechanism, minor limitations imposed, etc. Current program sizes
  140.         (VTEC45A,SCAN/CLEAN/VIRLIST v90 and VALIDATE) do allow a single 360Kb
  141.         DSDD disk installation.
  142.  
  143.      3. Options Lock may be activated from any submenu. Read VT45.DOC for a
  144.         list of options that are locked for each submenu, what the default
  145.         password is, how to change the password, etc.  Password entry to
  146.         continue is required in the event a virus infection is found during
  147.         a check of files or drives. Password is required to enable or
  148.         disable lock.
  149.  
  150.      4. Startup option /L was added. This option forces a self-test at
  151.         startup time, locks all options, limits program operation to SCAN/
  152.         CLEAN DRIVE(s) submenu only, SCAN only of floppies A: and B: if one
  153.         exists, etc. Read VT45A.DOC for a complete list of limitations
  154.         imposed by using this mode.
  155.  
  156.      5. Virus Fact Sheets module was modified to allow browsing through the
  157.         entire list of known virus infectors. It is no longer necessary to
  158.         select a virus ID code.
  159.  
  160.      6. VCLEAN.LST functions have been eliminated. Virus ID codes may be
  161.         entered manually as before. AUTO-DETECT logic now grabs the ID
  162.         code if virus infections have been found during SCAN operation.
  163.         The Virus ID Code is automatically placed into the Virus ID
  164.         Code Window saving users the extra step of ID code entry. Manual
  165.         entry of ID code is still available. AUTO-DETECT may not be able
  166.         to find the virus ID under certain circumstances. In such cases use
  167.         manual entry.

  171.      7. A NON-interrupt driven screen saver is now available. This option may
  172.         be turned on from the Default Table. Users may specify delay times
  173.         1 to 60 minutes before screen saver kicks in. The screen saver WILL
  174.         NOT interfere with system I/O's and other critical aspects of program
  175.         and system operation. The screen saver responds to both mouse click
  176.         and keystrokes. Read VT45A.DOC for more information.

  178.      8. All SCAN/CLEAN options are now saved with the default table. Also,
  179.         options no longer reset each time a user enters or leaves a submenu.
  180.         Once set, each option will remain in that state until the user
  181.         initiates a change.

  183.      9. Report MERGE function enhanced to include automatic deletion of
  184.         selected reports for merging thereby eliminating need for separate
  185.         deletion process.
  186.  
  187.     10. /AG, /CG, /RG and /GENERIC SCAN/CLEAN switches are now supported.
  188.         The VALIDATION submenu was renamed to IMMUNIZATION/RECOVERY. This
  189.         submenu supports McAfee Associates SCAN/CLEAN advanced virus
  190.         detection and recovery abilities.(Read VT45A.DOC for more info.)

  192.     11. The PATH FINDER was modified to include subdirectories 64 characters
  193.         in length. As before, normal and/or hidden attribute paths are
  194.         included. Choosing a path for Default Table entry has a 35 character
  195.         limitation imposed. All other operations allow larger string lengths.
  196.  
  197.     12. The path PICK LIST was eliminated.
  198.  
  199.     13. It is no longer necessary to place COMMAND.COM on the TERMINUS
  200.         installation disk when using a floppy installation. DOS SHELL and
  201.         RUN DOS BATCH FILE will not work if a floppy installation or
  202.         startup is detected. Error message is provided.
  203.  
  204.     14. STCMouse Unit tweaked to compensate for certain 486 33Mhz processor
  205.         systems. Also added TP6 delay fix.
  206.  
  207.     15. SCAN/CLEAN error levels 3 and 4 are now supported. Read SCAN docs
  208.         for more information.

  210.     16. The Virus Terminus sets the DOS errorlevel upon exit as follows:
  211.  
  212.       0 = Normal Exit  1 = Virus Infection Detected  2 = Abnormal Termination
  213.  
  214.         In the event that a user chooses to (C)ontinue instead of (H)alt when
  215.         a virus is detected, the errorlevel will still be set to 1 when the
  216.         Virus Terminus is finally quit from the main menu.

  219.               THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c) achieves optimum performance when it is
  220.          installed and run from a hard drive. However, it is best to run the
  221.          VIRUS TERMINUS from a floppy if your computer system is known to be
  222.          infected. THE VIRUS TERMINUS(c), SCAN.EXE, CLEAN.EXE, VALIDATE.COM
  223.          and VIRLIST will all fit on a high capacity floppy if you follow
  224.          the installation instructions in the program documentation file
  225.          VT45A.DOC . (720k , 1.2 Meg, 1.44 Meg disk size) SCAN/CLEAN program
  226.          disk swapping is allowed with /D startup option. Current program
  227.          sizes still allow installation on one 360Kb DSDD disk!
